Drain Cleaning

Drain cleaning is a necessary part of plumbing maintenance. No matter how diligent you are with what goes down your drains they can still get clogged at some point. Over time, items like fats, oils, grease, minerals, dirt, leaves, foreign objects, and tree roots can cause drain clogs. Not to mention hair down the shower drain. And don’t forget kids! Kids are definitely the cause of a LOT of drain clogs. 

Regular maintenance of drains and sewer lines can prevent the build up of substances in your drains that can eventually cause costly backups, floods and water damage. 

Beware of commercial drain cleaning products. They may claim to break down the debris clogging your drain and get your water flowing in an economical way, but they can also cause permanent damage to your drain pipes. The harsh chemicals can break down the glued joints and pipe, but are also TERRIBLE for our environment. Think about where your drain flows… those chemicals will be flowing there too. 

One last tip: DO NOT POUR BOILING WATER DOWN YOUR DRAIN! Most drains are constructed out of ABS or PVC pipe – which is rated for temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius. They can handle the hot water discharge from dishwashers and washing machines, but not from your tea kettle that was just whistling. Pouring boiling water that is 100 degrees Celsius or higher can cause the pipe and joints to soften or even melt
